About Town Makarska
Since
the first mention of the name of Makarska in the year 533 at Salona
Synod, many a traveller and a travel writer commended its gentle coves,
olive-groves and vineyards, white strands and deep shade of pine groves,
and above all the diligent and cordial hosts. In the meantime, Makarska
grew up into an important tourist destination and sub-regional centre
of the narrower region which includes the Makarska littoral, eastern
parts of the islands of Hvar and Brač and the hinterland of the
magnificent mountain of Biokovo.
The vicinity of Split,
Dubrovnik, Međugorje, Mostar, and the Neretva and Cetina rivers, and
good traffic connections make the Makarska an ideal place for vacation
and recreation throughout the year.
This combination of sea and
mountain, gentle climate with great number of sunny days offer the
possibilities for practising a great variety of sports and to engage in
many forms of sports recreation.
Sports facilities
The
major sports centres in the immediate surroundings (Split, Šibenik,
Zadar and Dubrovnik) offer the possibility to organize attractive sports
events, whereas excellent lodging facilities and good quality sports
grounds in the town and the surrounding localities (football fields,
tennis courts, athletic field, sports halls, fitness clubs, swimming
pools and indoor swimming pools) make the Makarska an ideal place for
training of all categories of sportsmen.
The sea and the beaches
of Makarska offer a space for various forms of recreation, but its real
singularity is the Biokovo mountain with its numerous hiking and biking
routes, and possibilities for practicing extreme sports and hunting
(hill walking, mountain and rock-climbing, extreme skiing and similar).
In addition to rich experience and tradition in organization of
sports events and hosting of athletes, Makarska has also other
advantages such as, among others, good traffic connections (airports at
Split and Dubrovnik, Makarska – Zagreb highway, railway routes – Ploče
and Split), an appropriate health care organization, good quality
medical teams at Makarska and the nearby Split, a special medical
rehabilitation Center «Biokovka», the vicinity of the world famous
excursion destinations: the Plitvice Lakes and the River Krka Falls.
With
the development of tourist facilities and the construction of the
Sports Centres at Makarska, Tučepi and Baška Voda the possibilities were
created for hosting international sports events and games of the
highest level (1979 Mediterranean Games, European Under-20 Basketball
Championship, Tennis Tournament, European Championship FIR, etc.).
Makarska sports - past and today
Thanks
to the mild Mediterranean climate, since 1960 on the sports grounds at
Makarska during winter a great number of athlete teams, the European and
world champions and record-holders make preparations for the next
season (the Pole Sidlo, the Czechs Željezni and Danjek, Stekić and
others). The Athletes Team USA has successfully completed their
preparations for the Split 2010 Continental Athlete Cup in Makarska.
Makarska
has hosted on several occasions the national football teams of the
USSR, Hungary, Czech Republic, Sweden, Angola and Yugoslavia during
their preparations, as also many football clubs from all over the Europe
(Stuttgart, Eintracht, Sturm Graz, Slavia Prague, Slovan Bratislava,
Stal Mielec, Norcheping, Twente, Lokomotiva Moscow, and almost all the
first league clubs of the former Yugoslavia.
